A pinball machine can be clean, polished, and fully working, yet still play badly because its setup is wrong. Get these right before changing rubbers, chasing switch problems, or blaming the game design.
Start With the Machine’s Position
Setup begins before you touch a level. Put the machine in its permanent playing position, on a floor that is as stable as possible. A cabinet set up on carpet, uneven tile, or a flexible raised floor can change position once players start leaning on it. That movement may be small, but pinball is sensitive to small changes.
Leave enough room to open the coin door, lift the playfield, and remove the backbox glass without moving the machine later. If the cabinet must be relocated after setup, check the level again. Even a short move can alter the leg adjusters.
Inspect the four legs and leg bolts first. Each leg should be tight, the bolts should seat correctly, and the leg levelers should turn freely. Worn levelers, damaged threads, or loose cabinet hardware make accurate adjustment difficult. Fix mechanical instability before attempting calibration.

Playfield pitch is the front-to-back angle of the machine. Most modern games are designed to play near 6.5 degrees, but the correct specification always depends on the manufacturer and title. Do not measure cabinet pitch and assume the playfield matches it. Cabinets, floor conditions, and playfield mounting geometry can introduce differences. Measure directly on the playfield using a purpose-built pinball level placed on a clean, unobstructed area. Avoid ramps, inserts with pronounced edges, wireforms, and visibly warped areas.
Adjust the rear leg levelers in equal amounts to establish the desired pitch. Make small changes, then recheck. One full turn can produce a larger result than expected, especially on machines with long rear legs. Once the pitch is close, work in quarter-turn adjustments rather than making large corrections.

Use the front leg levelers for fine side-to-side adjustment. Raise one front corner slightly, check the reading again, and repeat until the playfield is centered. If the machine needs a major correction, you may need to share the adjustment between front and rear levelers to keep the cabinet stable and maintain the correct pitch.
Do not chase perfect readings with aggressive adjustments. Floors are rarely perfect, and the important result is stable, repeatable play at the correct pitch. After each adjustment, gently settle the cabinet, then take a fresh reading. A machine can shift slightly when a leg is turned or when its weight redistributes.
Confirm Cabinet Stability Before You Play
A level machine that rocks is not correctly set up. Press lightly on each cabinet corner and listen for movement. If the machine shifts, identify which leg is not carrying weight and adjust it until all four contact points are firm.
This is especially important in public locations. Arcade players naturally brace themselves against the cabinet during intense games. A rocking cabinet changes ball behavior, creates noise, and can loosen hardware over time. Stable legs also help preserve the accuracy of your setup readings.
Check for these common problems before moving on:

Calibrate the Flippers With the Playfield Set
Flipper position should be checked only after pitch and level are correct. The visual relationship between the flipper bat, inlane, guide, and playfield reference marks is easier to judge when the machine is sitting as it will be played.
Turn the machine off before working around the flipper assemblies. Raise the playfield safely, inspect the linkage, and look for worn coil stops, loose crank assemblies, damaged bushings, or excessive end play. A flipper that is mechanically worn cannot be accurately calibrated by changing bat position alone.
Lower the playfield and compare each flipper bat with its intended resting position. Depending on the game, use the factory alignment marks, a straightedge reference, or the intended relationship to nearby inlane guides. Both flippers should sit consistently, but “identical” is not always correct if the playfield layout uses asymmetric references.
Loosen the bat clamp only enough to reposition the flipper. Set the bat carefully, tighten the clamp securely, and test its movement. The bat must return cleanly to its resting position without binding. Repeat on the other side, then test both flippers under power.
For detailed bat alignment, a suction-cup level can be useful because it stays in place during adjustment. Remove the suction cups before checking playfield pitch and side-to-side level. Those are separate measurements, and each should be taken with the tool used as intended.
Test flipper performance, not only appearance
A flipper can look correctly aligned and still perform poorly. Test familiar shots from both flippers: a center ramp, an orbit, a loop, or a controlled live catch. Listen for weak coils, delayed response, or inconsistent return. If one side feels different, inspect the mechanical assembly and electrical components before changing the bat angle again.
Collectors may prefer factory-style behavior. Operators may prioritize reliable, repeatable shots for high-volume play. In either case, avoid setting flippers unusually high just to make a difficult game easier. That can alter intended geometry, increase unwanted contact with guides, and hide a deeper maintenance issue.
Run a Real-World Play Test
The final check is not the level reading. It is how the game plays over several balls. Launch the ball, allow it to travel through different areas of the playfield, and watch for a repeated drift to one side. A consistent left or right bias can indicate that lateral level needs a fine correction.
Use controlled shots rather than random slap play. Test cradles on both flippers, post passes, dead bounces, and shots that travel through the center of the game. You are looking for consistency, not a game that never drains. Pinball should remain challenging when it was designed to be challenging.
If the machine feels wrong after correct leveling, look beyond the legs. Dirty or worn flipper parts, tired coils, weak voltage, warped playfield components, incorrect rubbers, and damaged balls can all affect behavior. Leveling establishes the foundation. It does not replace maintenance.
